Were looking for a full-time, unpaid Government Affairs Intern from June 3rd through August 30th. The ideal candidate is a student or young professional with demonstrated interest in government affairs and conservation policy who is capable of proactively researching political relationships, drafting informational materials on conservation issues, and communicating directly with land trusts, coalition partners, and federal officials. Youll find that interning for a small organization will give you ample opportunities to interact with all aspects of our work, be in the room at key meetings and events, and gain valuable nonprofit and Capitol Hill experience. About the Alliance The Land Trust Alliance is a national conservation organization working to save the places people love by strengthening land conservation throughout America. We represent Americas 1,700 local land conservation organizations in Washington, and mobilize them to achieve the following federal legislative priorities: I Create permanent tax incentives for land conservation and defend the charitable deduction II Maximize land trusts access to conservation funding in the Farm Bill III Defend funding for federal land conservation programs (LWCF, Forest Legacy, NAWCA, & Section 6) and expand their availability to land trusts. Specific responsibilities may include: Recruiting congressional co-sponsors, primarily by mobilizing local land trusts to ask Securing letters of commendation to Accredited land trusts from their representatives Gathering and presenting success stories of effective advocacy and program benefits Researching statistics regarding the use of Farm Bill conservation programs by land trusts Supporting our advocacy network by recruiting email subscribers, tracking land trust relationships with Congress, and analyzing debrief reports from our Advocacy Day Supporting our tax incentive and farm bill coalition meetings, initiatives, and events Drafting and updating policy fact-sheets, web content, Congressional district maps, and other communications for a variety of internal and external audiences Scheduling, preparing packets for, and occasionally attending meetings with public officials Qualifications: Demonstrated interest in public policy. Previous involvement in grassroots campaigns or experience on Capitol Hill a plus. Familiarity with land conservation, including knowledge of land trusts and of relevant tax issues, highly desirable. Strong oral and written communications skills, ability to communicate effectively with both the Alliance members and public decision-makers. Indian Tribes and organizations that support Native American communities have been successfully drawing upon national service resources to meet family and community needs for more than 45 years. The Corporation for National and Community Service through its Senior Corps, AmeriCorps State and National, AmeriCorps VISTA, AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC), and Learn and Serve America has a long-standing commitment to working with tribal nations on a government-to-government basis and is committed to enhancing the collaboration process across all programs to address critical issues affecting Native American communities. The programs of CNCS are committed to supporting the culture of service that has existed in Native American communities for generations. Our programs address critical issues of concern to Native American communities, including assisting elders, veterans and military families, cultural preservation, economic development, health and wellness, youth leadership, educational attainment, clean energy, and traditional language and land preservation. CNCS is unable to offer stipends, relocation or housing assistance. However, this internship offers opportunities to gain excellent practical work experience and skill development.
