Temporary Full Time (12 Weeks, 40 hours per week)
The Allstate Research and Planning Center (ARPC) in Menlo Park , CA has excellent internship opportunities for graduate-level students in statistics, applied mathematics, operations research and related fields. Interns will have the opportunity to apply their analytical expertise to real-life data and help answer challenging research questions in the insurance industry.
The ARPC is a small, independent and innovative group with the support of a large corporation. We offer the perfect combination of basic research projects and real business problems, as well as the time, tools and environment to effectively tackle both. You will be exposed to discussions about the latest trends in many areas of life (e.g., culture - social networks, technology telematics/smart homes, demographics - aging population), and will explore their impact on the insurance industry.
Examples of past projects:
Identifying Fraudulent Theft Claims - A statistical model based on claim facts and policyholder information was built to predict fraudulent auto theft claims. Techniques included graphical data exploration, logistic regression, and decision trees.
Understanding Why Customers Defect - Several thousand variables (e.g. price, insurance coverage, purchase patterns, population characteristics, market characteristics) are available to improve our understanding and prediction of customer defection. Project involves data visualization with SAS as well as other tools, and large-scale variable selection techniques.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Collaborate with analysts and develop research plan
- Prepare analysis dataset (data cleansing, feature extraction, merging multiple data sources)
- Perform statistical analysis of data
- Evaluate assumptions and stability of results on holdout data
- Prepare written report documenting results
- Present findings to colleagues at the ARPC
Qualifications
SKILLS/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
- Graduate-level student with concentration in a quantitative discipline such as statistics, applied mathematics, economics, or operations research
- Knowledge of statistical analysis techniques such as regression, decision trees, boosting, clustering, etc.
- Programming experience with SAS, R, or similar analytical tools.
- Experience working in a UNIX environment. Perl and Python a plus.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
- Team player but able to work independently with minimum direction
- Strong writing and presentation skills
