Metro North Adult Basic Education is a consortium of nine school districts, with twelve learning sites in the North Metropolitan area of Minneapolis & St. Paul, Minnesota. Our focus is on teaching ESL and ABE (adult education basic skills to prep for the GED, diploma or general skills for pursuing secondary education or employment, etc.). The Americorps Vista person is part of the Metro North ABE staff, providing support and continuing the momentum already established by previous "Vistas" in the area of outreach. This position is part of a 3-year grant opportunity. This person will: - Gain communications and marketing experience. - Expand outreach to low-income adults needing FREE ESL and GED classes to transition to better livable wage jobs. - Engage community members to volunteer. The VISTAs key activities will support the primary goals of the project: to increase the number of learners through improved marketing and promotion, and to increase the number and type of volunteers through program development and partnership building. Chapter Leader - REACT to FILM College Action Network

Do you like documentary film? Interested in social change? Fascinated by the film industry? Looking to inspire your peers and make a difference? The REACT to FILM College Action Network aims to expose, engage, and inspire young people around critical social issues. Launched in the fall of 2011, the College Action Network started out at about 10 colleges. Due to the overwhelmingly positive response, we currently have 27 chapters across the country, and are looking to expand to up to 50 chapters by the fall of 2012. College Action Network Chapter Leaders will be responsible for planning screening events featuring REACT to FILMs social issue based documentaries. In the 2011-2012 academic year, we screened Hell and Back Again, Miss Representation, The Last Mountain, Sing Your Song, The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom, and Living for 32. Each event aims to draw a large crowd, and uses an important social issue based documentary as the means for getting students to be more engaged in the issues facing themselves and others worldwide. Screenings are followed by a guest speaker (often film director or producer) or a panel discussion. REACT to FILM frequently uses Livestream technology to connect multiple colleges in the network for interactive video Q&As.
